PASCUA DE LOS MORAOS

Easter Sunday in Carcabuey is a gathering point for many residents, not only from Subbética but from many other towns who come to experience this festival on a Sunday that breaks with the traditional commemoration of Easter Sunday throughout Andalusia.

The Pascua de los Moraos is, above all, a representation of local culture. Coming to see it is wanting to feel it again, and being a spectator implies participating in the following years. Due to all these peculiarities and being the only "carnival," alongside those of Cadiz and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, that survived the dictatorship, it was declared a Tourist Interest Festival of Andalusia in 2006.

In Carcabuey, where the carnival is not as deeply rooted as in other municipalities of Subbética, the Pascua de los Moraos serves to break with the everyday life of alcobitense: children dressing up as old people, old people dressing up as women, women dressing up as monsters... everything has its place in this strange carnival, and everything is experienced on the streets where the celebration reaches its peak. Participants are the local inhabitants themselves who transform and intensely live those moments.

Some listen, the murgas break the silence, others laugh, masks break their laughter, and proclamations spread satirical verses about the most important events that occurred during the year at the local, national, and international levels.

In the evening, with the traditional dance, music plays until the early hours of the morning, completing a day full of fun, revelry, and a lot of celebration. Easter Sunday in Carcabuey is a carnival with high doses of extroversion and surrealism, exalting the grotesque and absurd.
