The Passion of Iznájar.

Representation of the Passion and Death of Jesus - The Passion

By the Cultural Association Hisn-Paso Ashar

Location of the performance: Multipurpose Room

Schedule: 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Historical Overview:

The theatrical representation of the Passion and Death of Jesus, carried out by the residents of Iznájar, is the oldest in the province of Cordoba, dating back to the early 17th century. The ancient text was passed down from parents to children, so it can be assumed that it accumulated historical and biblical inaccuracies to the point that an episcopal document dated 1742 prohibited the performances under penalty of excommunication.

The staging ceased during the Civil War only to resume in the mid-forties, in the old way, with texts passed down from generation to generation, emphasizing mime more than the dialogues themselves (later known as "El Paso Antiguo").

In 1957, the decision was made to abandon the old texts and stage the play "La Divina Tragedia" written by the Jesuit father José Julio Martínez. The work begins with Jesus' entry into Jerusalem and culminates with his death on the Cross. This new version, based on an already written text, resulted in a quadrupling of the number of participants, with the consequent greater effort in memorization, coordination of rehearsals, costume making, or set design.

The performance continued for several years in outdoor settings, various spaces in the streets and squares of the town, which meant that, on the eve, inclement weather became the biggest threat to undo the work done in the previous months. It was for this reason that the decision was made to move the staging to the Parish of Santiago Apóstol, in the old La Villa neighborhood, where it was performed until 1999. Since that date, the performance has taken place in its current location, the Multipurpose Room of the town.

Today:

The Cultural Association Hisn-Paso Ashar is in charge of the staging of the fifteen scenic tableaux that, over the years and with the support of technological advances, have been endowed with great quality. Its current location, the Multipurpose Room, has allowed for improvements that are reflected in the warm reception and satisfaction shown by the more than four hundred people who attend this performance and fill the venue every year.

The strong attachment of this tradition to the people of Iznájar can be seen in the enthusiasm with which more than a hundred people dedicate their free time non-professionally, working with enthusiasm in rehearsals, staging, atmosphere, music, sound, lighting, design, and repair of sets, costumes, makeup, hairstyling, and all the tasks necessary to ensure that this ancestral tradition is fulfilled every year.

This representation is, as a result of the legacy of a tradition practiced for centuries, uniquely unique in the province of Cordoba and is duly recognized.

Number of participants: 120 people
