Las Chozas

The hamlet of Las Chozas, in the district of Los Pechos, is nestled in the Sierra de La Torre, to the "recacha" of the south, and constitutes a privileged viewpoint towards Iznájar and its surroundings.

The toponym Las Chozas de la Fraila, or of the Friars, refers to the predominant type of construction in its origins, which gradually transformed into rustic dwellings and later into small cortijos.

Although many historians and scholars do not dismiss the possibility of Neolithic and Chalcolithic habitation in the Iznájar area, and more specifically in the caves located on the hill at the foot of which the current hamlet of Las Chozas is situated, traces of settlements from Argaric villages have been found, with continuity during the Bronze Age and Iberian and Roman periods, with characteristic villae dedicated to the agricultural exploitation of the environment emerging during this time.

The public washhouse and the "Fuente de la Pililla" are constructive elements of popular architecture that are preserved in the hamlet, recalling not too distant times when these places were reserved areas and obligatory meeting places for women, who came to wash clothes or collect water for other domestic uses, with the washhouse located in the royal land also serving as a watering place.

It celebrates its festivals in honor of San Marcos on the 24th and 25th of April.
