Via Verde del Aceite

The Olive Oil Greenway in the Subbética region runs for 58 kilometers through the south of Córdoba, following the route of the old "Oil Train." Today, this route allows cyclists and hikers to enjoy the beautiful landscapes of the Natural Park of the Sierras Subbéticas and the rich birdlife of the Laguna del Salobral Reserve, bringing us closer to towns such as Luque, Zuheros, Doña Mencia, Cabra, and Lucena, dotted with castles and mysterious caves. As it passes through our city, it goes through the old Renfe stations of Lucena and the neighborhood of Las Navas del Selpillar, both rehabilitated stations.

In the area of the old Lucena Station, we find different spaces, offering visitors a wide variety of services, with garden areas, bike parks, a children's play area, a skateboarding rink, and a large parking area. The large hangar houses a Mesón-Restaurant, offering visitors the best of the rich local and regional cuisine. The building allows us to approach this type of industrial architecture, as its original structure is preserved both inside and outside.

In the Lucena part, we also have an interesting bridge, popularly called "Puente de Hierro" (Iron Bridge). This bridge on the railway line between Puente Genil-Espeluy once allowed crossing the deep gorge of the El Alamedal stream. The first trains began their journey in 1891, and finally, the railway line was closed to traffic in 1984. It was manufactured in the workshops of Mersieurs Daydée et Pillet, in the French city of Creil, north of Paris, with a length of 70 meters and a height of about 30 meters. It is also noteworthy that the general project and its construction are attributed to engineers Delaperriére and Alesandri, and the work was carried out under the supervision of Mr. Lantier, section chief, and Mr. Vigier, conductor. It is curious that this bridge was the first built in steel throughout Spain. Cyclists, hikers, and sports enthusiasts can now enjoy its reused sections as the Olive Oil Greenway.
