Baroque’s Route in Cordoba

The "Cordoban Baroque Route" highlights the towns of Priego de Córdoba, Lucena, Cabra, Encinas Reales, Benamejí, Rute, or Iznájar, places filled with exceptional examples of valuable baroque art. This is an art that flourished with the splendor of the 18th century and took strong root in the region, marked by intense religious fervor.

Priego de Córdoba, Cabra, and Lucena are its foremost examples, forming an explosion of authentic monumental jewels with exuberant features in their churches: temples covered in decoration, broken straight lines, twisting columns, chapels, and altarpieces filled with light and color.

The route begins in Priego de Córdoba, where the most precious baroque heritage in southern Spain is hidden. Its best example: the Church of the Assumption, whose beauty explodes in the Sacrament Chapel, marking a before and after in this style. A set of plasterwork where the morning light enhances the most subtle play of curves and reliefs.

The Hermitage of the Aurora and the churches of San Pedro, San Juan de Dios, and las Angustias complete a baroque repertoire also present in the manor houses flanking Río Street.

The next stop is Cabra, where the Baroque also left its preciousness in the parishes of los Remedios and Santo Domingo; in the churches of San Juan Bautista, the Agustinas, the Escolapias... But above all, in the beautiful ensemble of the Assumption and Angels, built on a mosque and preserving its red marble columns.

The third exponent is Lucena, where the Baroque reaches a new milestone: the imposing tabernacle of San Mateo, in the parish of the same name. A representation of heaven loaded with symbolism, considered the cathedral of the Subbética. It is the culmination of this art in the locality, but not its only representation. Because it also shines genuinely in a myriad of churches (San Martín, San Juan Bautista, the Franciscans...).
