Flora and fauna

In the region of Subbética, two well-differentiated areas stand out: on one hand, the area within the Natural Park of Sierras Subbéticas, formed by gentle hills and valleys, and on the other hand, the countryside area, rich in vineyards, cereal crops, and olive groves.

Regarding the flora of the Natural Park, it is typically Mediterranean, with 17 Habitats of Community Interest that harbor a high number of threatened species (11 from the Andalusian Catalog of Threatened Species), as well as the greatest floristic diversity of the province of Cordoba (more than 1880 species), including some endemics exclusive to these mountains.

The holm oak predominates especially alongside a large proportion of gall oaks. The spiny cushion shrubland stands out on the highest peaks, as well as the fine broom and the blue broom, the latter known as cushion of the nun.

It is worth noting that in the cliffs, ravines, crevices, and niches, the presence of cliff-dwelling birds such as the peregrine falcon, eagle owl, griffon vulture, golden eagle, Bonelli's eagle, alpine chough, and redstart has been determined.

Finally, the abundant cavities of the geopark provide shelter for a significant diversity of bats, with 16 described species.
