Las Buitreras

The Las Buitreras Trail connects Luque with Carcabuey. The trail first ventures into a landscape of olive groves, gradually accompanied by wild trees and shrubs such as broom, hawthorn, holly, mastic, or some scattered holm oaks. Further along, as we progress, we encounter numerous almond trees that, if the journey is taken in February, will delight us with their white and pink flowers. After a slight descent, we arrive at the Zurreón Stream, whose banks have fostered the appearance of ash trees, walnut trees, poplars, and the presence of small orchards. In this area is the Almond Tree of the Las Buitreras Trail, a tree classified by the Department of the Environment due to its exceptional dimensions. Following the path, we enter a more rocky terrain, where the olive grove is replaced by scrubland with some arboreal holm oaks. In this section, we can access a variant of the route: the Marchaniega path that leads to the Fuente del Espino passing through the Cortijo de la Osa. In this variant, we will encounter numerous gates that we must close behind us. It is a good time to rest after the ascent while contemplating, from the viewpoint on the left, the breathtaking views of the Hoya de Priego, Zagrilla, Carcabuey, Sierra de Albayate, Sierra Gallinera, and Sierra Horconera, the latter being where the Tiñosa is located, which at 1,570 meters is the highest peak in the province of Córdoba. Continuing our journey, we will spot on our right a huge limestone cliff, the southern slope of the Abuchite. On its walls, known as Las Buitreras, jackdaws and red-billed choughs nest, as well as the largest colony of griffon vultures in the natural park. Following the trail southward, we reach the Cortijo de Bernabé. At this point, a 500-meter lane allows us to approach the beautiful Bernabé Spring. The Bernabé Stream has led to the appearance of ash trees and poplars. The route ends in the vicinity of Carcabuey, a point from which it is also possible to start the trail in the opposite direction, towards Luque.
