Natural Park

Luque is in a privileged position when it comes to nature, as it is nestled in the Subbética Cordobesa mountain range and is home to the Salobral or Conde Lagoon within its municipal area. Special attention must be paid to the vegetation; the ancient twisted and exuberant holm oaks are particularly beautiful. But as in all Mediterranean mountain ranges, the holm oak is the queen of our mountains. In terms of fauna, our mountains are very rich, housing a variety of animals such as wild boars, wildcats, genets, weasels, various types of eagles and hawks, owls, rabbits, hares, partridges, etc. Under the designation of the Natural Park of the Sierras Subbéticas, we find an area protected by the Junta de Andalucía in 1988, with great ecological and landscape richness, covering an area of 31,568 hectares, irregularly distributed among eight municipalities of the Mancomunidad: Cabra, Carcabuey, Doña Mencía, Iznájar, Luque, Priego de Córdoba, Rute, and Zuheros. The most characteristic element of this mid-mountain area is the beautiful karstic modeling of its limestone rock. The terrain, with steep slopes and elevations, rises above beautiful and narrow valleys. The vegetation of this protected area, typically Mediterranean, is rich in holm oaks and holly oaks, with maples and alders also present. One of the great attractions of the park is the existence of numerous endemic species - Iberian, Betic, North African, and local - and others whose blooms occur throughout the year, such as lilies, daffodils, peonies, or orchids; alongside them, a series of beautiful shrubs stand out, such as mastic and wild olive, among others. The traveler arriving in these lands will traverse mountains of great geological importance, with contrasting and beautiful landscapes that offer very special features for visitors. The Sierra de Cabra stands out, declared a "Place of Natural Interest" in 1929. Its highest peak, known as El Picacho, is at an altitude of 1,217 meters. El Picacho is considered the "balcony of Andalusia," allowing views on clear days not only of the most important peaks of the Subbética but also of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The Sierra de Cabra offers interesting geological formations such as the Lapiaz de los Lanchares. The Natural Park contains the highest peak in the province of Córdoba: La Tiñosa, at 1,570 meters. Other mountains of great beauty and geological richness are those of Rute and Horconera, where the mentioned summit of La Tiñosa is located next to Bermejo Peak, at 1,476 meters. In both foothills, majestic flights of the golden eagle and the Bonelli's eagle can be observed, as well as the peregrine falcon and the Egyptian vulture. Near Rute, you will find the beautiful site of the La Hoz river gorge. In the aforementioned Cabra massif, near Lobatejo and Abuchite peaks, the flights of the griffon vulture will be proud protagonists alongside the wheatears. The vegetation includes mastic, broom, and rosemary. Other peaks of interest are Pollos and Gallinera, near Carcabuey. The Natural Park of the Sierras Subbéticas offers different hiking and mountain routes that will allow you to contemplate the beauty and uniqueness of this ecological space, routes that enable the knowledge of a varied fauna and flora.
